Holiday Gift Guide - For The Little Ladies

Being an Aunt to four fabulous little ladies this gift round up was pretty much a cake walk for me. However it also made me realize that if I bought those girls everything I wanted to, I might go broke. I decided to break up the gift guides for the kids by gender and include items that vary in age so there is a little something for everyone ranging from newborn to toddlers to tweens. Happy Gift Giving!
Untitled #551

twelve - quite possibly the best advertisement I have ever seen promoting young girls to break the princess cliche and enjoy a game that encourage thinking, science & engineering.

thirteen - kids love a story before bed so naturally a book with coordinating pajamas is a double win.

fourteen -  a favorite color combo of my girls, pink & orange striped sweater with a built in sparkle neckline is super cute {also extra 40% off right now}

Art Discovery - Clare Elsaesser

Every once and a while I stumble across something on Etsy that really moves me. Whether it be a an item that I haven't seen before or someone who can create something bespoke without having to pay through the roof, it's a source for so many creative things. Art however is one of those things thanks to my friend Amelia that I have truly begun to really appreciate and when I find an artist whose work really leaves me blown away I am sure to bookmark it and share it with you all. That is exactly how I felt when I saw the works of Clare Elsaesser in her Etsy shop. I don't know the exact words to describe her style but I do know that I love it. Take a looksie below and see for yourself on how amazing this person's talent is. It has me dreaming of some serious wall space in our future home to create a gallery wall in.  Plus she studied art in Boston so it's like supporting a local friend!

Inspired by the art of this very talented gal I thought I would dream up a little gallery wall featuring her some of her beautiful work.

Holiday Gift Guide - Stocking Stuffers

Growing up our holiday tradition was to always open gifts from Santa on Christmas Eve and then the  stockings on Christmas morning. So I thought I would do a little round up of stocking stuffer gift ideas all under $25!

Holiday Gift Guide - The Luxe List

Every year when the Neiman Marcus Holiday Catalog appears I love to flip through the pages of the ridiculously over priced gifts that they suggest for the gift giving season. I mean, a diamond experience for $1.8 million...c'mon. However it is fun to imagine an endless budget to give your favorite peeps the ultimate gift. It reminds me of when I was little and would visit NYC's FAO Schwartz this time of year and dream of the motorized cars that looked like the real deal or the giant piano as seen in one of my favorite movies BIG. So for the fun of it, I put together a list of gifts that would be fun to give if there weren't any monetary boundaries. What would you want if money was no object?

Untitled #547

I know the Hermes Avalon blanket has been seriously seen everywhere but I still love it and think it's a classic piece you will never tire of. What woman wouldn't love a little blue box to open on Christmas, especially when sparkly diamonds are inside. A few years ago I gifted my guy a scooter for Shelter Island motoring. I know he would die if I ever upgraded his "hog" to the beloved BMW motorcycle. Burberry is the master behind the perfect pieces of outwear. This classic toggle coat is no exception to their genius. A perfect ladylike tote in a simple design is something that will never go out of style. I am 34 going on 4 and still every year ask for a puppy under the Christmas tree. I would likely pass out if it ever happened, I mean, who wouldn't??? Every mans dream of an adult tree house can be satisfied with this uber luxurious floating tent. Finally a gorgeous piece of furniture for your guy is a luxury that is always in style and actually provides comfort, double win.

Weekend Wear - Holiday Attire

Come December the holiday festivities are in full swing. This means work parties, friend gatherings and your typical celebrations that only come this time of year. So what to wear to them? I thought from here on out I would do weekend wears all themed to the seasons attire. First up I love the ensemble below with all the different textures in it. Soft velvets, silky satins and matte suede all create a luxe look for a holiday party that doesn't require cocktail attire.

Take Me Away - Under The Sea

Calling all Little Mermaid & Finding Nemo fans! Thanks to a new under water hotel the infamous phrase "sleeping with the fishes" has a whole new meaning. Located off the coast of Tanzania and a part of the Manta Resort. This underwater experience comes with a three level isolated room in the middle of the ocean. The top floor is the sun worshiping space where you can lounge and relax while working on your tan, the sea level room is home to your facilities and sitting area and the lower level is essentially your private aquarium where you lay to rest your head. That is if you can resist seeing all the creatures swimming around you. I just love the idea of a vacation being a truly unique and memorable experience. I will definitely be adding this and swimming with pigs to the old bucket list.

Holiday Gift Guide - For The Foodie

This week I thought I would take a break from the usual sip & snack recipes and instead share some great gifts of the edible variety. I mean the holidays after all are the time to indulge and the winter fashions allow you to disguise an extra pound or two. So below I thought I would put together a selection of delicious treats that will be happily consumed by whomever you gift them to.
The best part is no cooking required!
Untitled #546

one - Shopping local is key to keeping our neighbors in business and I personally adore the Boston boutique Olives & Grace for sourcing other local business for their artesian products. The best part is you can create a box of your favorite treats and create a truly personalized gift.

two - Macaron of the month club - yes please! I adore Dana's Bakery for it's unique flavors, neon macaron's and creative gifting & classes!

three - Tis the time of the year for everything peppermint flavored and hands down my addiction to the William Sonoma peppermint bark has me wanting to gift this to myself.

four - With a name like "studmuffin desserts" how can you resist. This West Village bakery provide petite desserts in darling packaging. I personally would go for the cookie variety but I feel confident you wouldn't be let down sampling anything they make.

five - My family and members and I go absolutely insane for these Montana made caramels. They are ridiculously decadent and every single flavor is ridiculously delicious. My man favors the espresso and I go crazy over the celtic sea salt. Get them & thank me later :)

six - Popcorn is always a great snack for watching a holiday movie so why not try this crunchy treat in some tasty new flavors.

seven & eight - Gift your guy an awesome beverage crate filled with some delicious craft beer from Urban Grape. I love the idea of giving something new to try and luckily this shop offers the ability to buy bottles individually so you can try a bunch without a commitment to the typical six pack.

nine - Squirrel Brand Nuts have amped up the game in tasty snacks with flavors like Italian Black Truffle Almonds, Creme Brulee Almonds & Fleur-De-Sel Pistachios to just name a few are perfect for snacking with your craft beer or favorite vino.

ten - You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream. So honestly, tell me who wouldn't want a  tasting of some small batch luxury ice cream???

Holiday Gift Guide - For The Pets

Growing up with three dogs and three kids meant that something was always happening in our house. I honestly loved it. I have the best memories of having a house full of pets that were truly members of our family, so why not spoil them on Christmas like you would any other relative. I know in our house these wet noses will be getting lots of treats from santa despite them not always being so good.
Untitled #544
one & two - durable chew toys that wont be shredded to smithereens in adorable shapes of fire hydrants and nautical anchors.

three & four - fill up a stylish canister with your pups favorite treats, just make sure they are made in the USA!

five - I am not a huge cat fancier but I imagine that they would like a little private sleeping nook to be left alone in.

six - Claws can ruin your beautiful furniture so why not give them a scratching pad of their own to run their paws over.

seven - Pretty sure the only time dogs hate their owner is when we dress them up but how can you resist an adorable santa scarf & hat for a photo opp this holiday season.

eight - Quite possibly the most hilarious dog chew toy I have ever laid on, most definitely will provide endless entertainment and laughs.

nine - The creme de la creme of pet sleep bedding is not only comfy for your K9 but also super pretty to look at with lots of patterns available to match your homes decor.

ten - A pretty yet simple basket to store all your pets toys.

eleven - endless kitty entertainment with this snarky lazer.

twelve - a purrrrfect tote filled with mice for your kitty.

thirteen - A chic water dish for the posh pup.

Holiday Gift Guide - For the Fella's

The men are severely outnumbered by the woman in our family so I only have three guys to shop for this year. However every year I still feel stumped on what to get them as their needs and wants are much more simplified then their female counterparts. A few gift ideas for the fellas that I love so much are listed below & later on today some treats for mans best friend will be shared.
Untitled #543

one - Men love things that are compact & convenient so this iPhone case/wallet serves a duel purpose with style and at an awesome price point {$40}!

two - Pretty much everything I said in prezzie number one is true for this handy pocket knife. I am especially loving wood finish versus the typical stainless steal.

three - Help keep your fella groomed with ease with a masculine yet compact kit that holds everything he needs to take care of his good looks.

four - Leave it to Ralph Lauren to make dressing with style a breeze with their layered mens fashions. I personally love a sweater and button down shirt combo and this one is just right!

five - Listening to tunes just got a whole lot more stylish. The masculine dark green color and the retro look of these headphones is a double win your special guy.

six - Scotch Scotch Scotch - I love Scotch! Why not give your anchorman some decadent dark chocolate and single malt scotch flavored candies. The accompanying flask is perfect for filling with their favorite cordial.

seven - I am totally digging this modern look of a classic color combination of gold and brown on a watch. The amped up style is perfect for a guy who can appreciate a good looking accessory.

eight - A rustic styled iPhone dock is perfect for your outdoorsy loving guy.

nine - Backgammon is big with the men in my house. What other game calls for a glass of wine and a cigar??? This chic leather set is not only good looking but also portable!

ten - My guy is all too often on the road. So a great weekender or a garment bag is a necessity.

eleven - Bring on the Preppy with the Barbour brand. I adore their classic outwear looks that I think work great on any guy. We picked up a similar style of the above coat for my guy earlier this fall and I swoon every time he wears it. I am pretty much in love with everything this company makes.

twelve - Decor seems a bit of an oddity to give to a man but I love the idea of giving an object for their desk or office. This jack can be used as a paperweight and or door stop or look sleek as it sits on a shelf with a pile of books.

thirteen - A great shoe that works from day to night is key. This boot oozes good looks and comfort.

fourteen - I couldn't resist a Boston themed gift for my guy, especially since he is all too often on the go. These petite toiletries are perfect for refreshing after a long day of travel.

fifteen - At the end of a long day we all need a place to drop our things and know exactly where they are the next day. This leather catchall is perfect for holding your money clip, watch and keys.

Holiday Gift Guide - For The Host/Hostess

Welcome friends, we are here on day one of the holiday gift guides. I thought I would start with some fabulous finds for the folks who love to throw a little holiday soiree. Whether you are gifting someone who loves to entertain in style or want to bring a little something to a holiday party for the person who is hosting all the little lovelies below are some suggestions to inspire you for the start of the many festivities that take place this time of year.
Untitled #541

one - something sparkly is nearly a necessity around the holidays so these beaded coasters are perfect for placing your cocktail on or adorning your bar cart.

two - I don't know a single person who doesn't love receiving some tasty bubbly any time of year. It's perfectly packaged in this adorable Kate Spade Champagne Tote.

three - Pretty patterned plates are perfect for the people who love to entertaining. What snack wouldn't look amazing on those little stunners.

four - Sometimes a good old fashioned desk calendar is just the best for checking dates and planning parties during the busy holiday season.

five - A party isn't a party without some delicious cheese and crackers to snack on. Why not get into the spirit of the season with this fun snowflake shaped cutting board.

six - My complete admiration for stripes continues to grow. This Kate Spade Candle is not only chic with it's glossy design but I love the cheeky phrase on it.

seven - Holiday decor can get a bit carried away with tons of embellishments. I personally love the idea of keeping it simple with a pretty faux boxwood wreath maybe add some pretty velvet ribbon for hanging it with style.

eight - how sweet is this bottle set for the hosting duo to enjoy after the party is over.

nine - Calling all candyaholics like yours truly! This cocktail & cordial themed bento box is perfect for your satisfying your sugar fix.

ten - White wine is its tastiest when served at a nice chilled temperature. These little drops help cool your glass to a perfect temperature in ninety seconds. Yes please!

eleven - Lacquer trays are so versatile for displaying drinks and snacks or even just having on hand as holiday decor. Add on the monogram for an extra personal touch.

Color Combo Crush - Black & White

Is there any better combination of colors the black and white? I think not. I have been on a bit of a bender with my obsession with the classic color duo. I recently picked up this blouse to try to satisfy my obsession but have been seriously coveting a whole lot more of the two hues together. Whether it's a graphic print, color blocked designs, classic stripes or just a small detail like the contrasting  trim, I can't get enough. A few of my favorites are listed below along with my inspiration on how to wear the two together here.

Weekend Wear - The Real Deal

I always enjoy putting together the weekend wear posts. They not only serve a purpose for my own inspiration with clothing I already have in my closet but they allow me to find items that I am coveting at great prices like that coat below. I have been craving a parka for New England's chilly winters but have yet to pull the trigger on purchasing one. Today's post just might motivate me to do so. While I love sharing outfits that boast beautiful high heels or feminine details like lace, what you will usually find me in is my favorite denim with a silk blouse and my favorite comfy flats.  I always opt for a cross-body bag for strolling around the city to keep my hands free and some simple jewelry, including the little diamond studs I have had since I was sixteen. So I thought I would keep it real and share an outfit inspired by my real weekend wear would look like.

Thank you for reading & have a great weekend!

Sweaters & Statements

As the temps have been dropping here in Boston it's becoming more difficult to look cute as we have to be bundled up to face the elements. I am not quite ready for coat weather as my favorite thing about fall is the luxury of being able to walk out the door with a sweater and jeans. However here in New England, that lasted for about a month then earlier this weak winter peaked it's ugly head into our city. So despite my reluctance to break out the outerwear, I will be doing my best to look put together underneath them. My go to is a cozy sweater and of course some fabulous statement jewelry.

Sip & Snack - Pom Fiesta

One of my favorite cuisines hands down has got to be Mexican food. I think I could live on tacos, guacamole and margaritas and be completely content. However having my tried and true favorites can sometimes stop me from trying new recipes in fear they wont live up to my beloved classics. Luckily for me my friend helped with today's post and inspired me when she made me her pomegranate guacamole. The combination of the sweet and tart pom seeds along with the creamy avocado was too good to not share. It also inspired a bunch of other recipes using the pomegranate to create yourself a colorful, healthy and delicious fiesta.

I used this recipe for the chicken but decided when it was done roastin to shred it and put in a soft taco. I lightly drizzled the pomegranate sauce on it so it didn't overwhelm the flavor of the meat or turn it pink {ick}. It was a wonderful combination of texture and flavors as the cinnamon sugar gave it some warmth but the garlic and wine gave it a savory bite. I then topped the taco with the most delicious pomegranate basil and queso fresco salsa recipe that I found here. My only substitution was sunflower seeds instead of pepitas, because I simply couldn't find them  in the market. The salsa was seriously my kryptonite, it was SO good, a must make if you like the salty and sweet combination.

Margaritas are my favorite drink of all time. When I am feeling lazy I will buy the pre-made mix, usually a skinny girl bottle and then doctor it up with my favorite flavors. This time around I added a tablespoon of pom juice, fresh arils and a slice of lime. It's easy and delicious, double win.

Finally my friend whose guacamole recipe inspired today's theme spilled the deets on her avocado goodness. We pretty much cleared the plates after the photo below was taken.

Ingredients

one small shallot
one large ripe avocado
juice of one lime
1/2 cup pomegranate arils
salt & pepper to taste

Directions

dice avocado & shallot and place in a bowl for gently mixing {this is a chunky guacamole}, add in lime, chopped cilantro till evenly blended. Garnish with pomegranate seeds and season to taste with s&p.

Enjoy!

DIY - Thinking Outside the Box Clutch

Finding inspiration for blog posts that are worth sharing with you all isn't always easy. Sure you can find something fabulous and expensive and recreate a lower cost version for yourself but I thought I would try to think outside the usual parameters and take my inspiration and create something that resembles the original but serves an entirely different function. When I spotted this clutch on instagram during fashion week, I was seriously smitten. I have always admired the design of a box clutch but especially adored the added sparkle of the rhinestones. While a pricey clutch wasn't in my budget, I thought I would try to recreate the look on something I use every day, my phone.
Check out all the bedazzled details below.

glue // rhinestones {mine were from M&J Trimming but were sew on, non sew on are better} // iPhone cover I used {another version, also here

1. lay out the rhinestones in desired pattern & photograph that pattern
2. with the photo as your guide, start gluing your first rhinestone in the center then retracing your pattern stone by stone
3. let dry & adhere to your cell phone

Let's Get Local - Sweet Confections

I have been lucky to constantly find myself surrounded by inspiring women doing their thing in the business world and not only succeeding at it but willing to share bits of their personal life and advice with us here on the blog. I absolutely adore getting to know the gals I feature a bit more with this "let's get local" series and love that todays guest has broadened my horizon on the fabulous finds that lay outside the city boarders that I am so accustomed to staying within. I CANNOT wait to try some of her suggestions for North Shore and Jamaica Plain hot spots, never mind get to indulge in one of her tasty treats again. I am thrilled to share with you all some lovely details about the fabulous Jocelyn, the talented and beautiful lady behind the delicious sweets of Mayflour Confections

Tell us a little about Jocelyn, the gal behind the pretty confections, i.e. what you like to do on your free time, personal style in fashion or home decor, guilty pleasures etc.

Most of my free time is spent with friends- in their kitchens sipping coffee and talking about food, out for dinner + drinks and talking about food, or sitting by an outdoor fire, making s’mores and talking about…food. You’d think the topic would get old, but it really never does, and it keeps me inspired at home and at work.

I am so in love with my industry that I jump at the opportunity to be an extra set of hands for other vendors…there is just nothing more fun than the excitement and romance before a wedding. If I do have a weekend without an event, I’m usually at the beach, or headed to the mountains to visit out of town friends. I love when I have time to get to a yoga class, watch a movie, or test a new recipe. In general, I really enjoy my time at home.

When it comes to fashion, I’m a bit of a lost cause- I’m really a jeans, T, and ponytail kind of girl- just thinking about accessories makes my head hurt. But home décor, I love. I could talk tile, light fixtures, and paint color for days, and have a serious passion for beautiful glassware, mugs, and linens. Having worked for a housewares company as a store designer for many years, I love good design in home décor- and what I most enjoy on Pinterest, blogs, and in magazines. I love all things clean and simple, and am usually drawn to midcentury furniture and décor that is soft, light, and neutral with organic shape + texture.

What made you want to start your own business and do you have any advice for someone starting out in a similar field?

For me it was a slow realization, as I was happy in my previous career. But, more and more I became aware that baking for events- and baking cakes, was what made me most happy. And then I realized that there was a demand there, other people were as passionate about good cake as I was- and there is nothing better than being able to share what makes you most happy with others. So I decided to take the leap and launch Mayflour.

My advice for anyone starting their own business, in my field or another, is to know what you do best, what you’re most passionate about, and stick to it. It’s hard when you are starting out to stay focused on exactly what you want to be doing, rather than what others might want from you. But keep a clear vision, offer a focused product or service, put time into presenting your brand, and you’ll have success because the people coming to you will already understand and value what you do. I would also say, connect with other small business owners; build relationships with people in your field. There is nothing more valuable than being able to support and inspire one another.

How would you describe your design aesthetic when it comes to executing an overall look of a cake or dessert for a client?

My belief is that simple is beautiful and ingredients should speak for themselves. So for me, it always starts with flavor. Once I know what ingredients I’m working with, then I can think about design. I love clean lines and subtle embellishments that are appropriate to both the celebration and the season. I think there is nothing more lovely than soft, creamy swirls of frosting finished off with seasonal fruit, an elegant silk ribbon, or beautiful fresh flowers.

What is your favorite flavor and most frequently requested item?

I’m always partial to anything Lemon; I absolutely love citrus and I think Canelés are kind of magical- little, caramelized bites of heaven. But hands down, my most requested item is my carrot cake with cream cheese frosting…I know a few people that actually go a little crazy for it.

Where did you grow up & what brought you to New England, what are some of your favorite spots to dine, shop & or visit?

I’m a die hard New Englander. Born and raised, and went to college locally. I moved to Chicago for pastry school, which was a dream, but I couldn’t imagine living anywhere but here.

I lived in and around Boston for years, but have never really been a city girl. I moved to the North Shore last winter, and never looked back, although a piece of my heart will always belong to JP and I still frequent City Feed, Ten Tables, and The Haven when I’m in the city visiting friends. I’ve been picnicking in the Arboretum since I was in high school {especially during Lilac season} and I used to love a trip out to Wellesley College to enjoy their beautiful greenhouse, which is an amazing spot to visit in the dead of winter.

As for my new home on Cape Ann, breakfast at The Market Restaurant in the summer is my absolute favorite. I’ve been known to make frequent trips to Down River Ice Cream for an afternoon treat, and Short & Main {The Market’s sister restaurant} for pizza, oysters and cocktails. In Rockport, Milk & Honey and Lula’s Pantry are great spots to find beautiful home goods. There is no shortage of fresh produce and eggs, and I find myself making frequent trips to local farms, or the Rockport or Cape Ann farmers’ market. My favorite place to visit is Halibut Point State Park- the rocky coastline is simply breathtaking. The North Shore is really just one beautiful spot after another, there’s nothing better than living by the ocean.
